Oscillations of nature

A rather unusual heading for a text explaining the design of a new regional competence centre for the Raiffeisen Bank! But it precisely expresses the way in which this business is deeply rooted in its history, an understanding that is more valid than ever before: nature and sustainability.

The start was an analysis of the site: the striking topography called for a deeper examination of this context. The slopes that roll gently towards a small pond inspired the form-finding process. The anticipated contours of the terrain were modulated and transformed, creating a gentle momentum in the building and a harmony of planes, edges and terraces as a resonance of the existing natural situation, so to speak – the building as an oscillation of nature.

The rational facade on the entrance side is the counterpart to the smart form of the side that is oriented towards the landscape. On the entrance front we find a clear cross-section that relates to the road space. While on the landscape side the orientation generates the maximum possible length for arranging office spaces that have expansive views of nature, the entrance facade is laid out as communication factor that makes an inviting gesture. These qualities will be evident in both the first building phase as well as in the extension.

The individual levels of the building program respond intelligently to the overall topographical situation. The public floor is at the same level as the road and is therefore relates directly to the entrance. Upon entering an inviting space opens up and then gradually reduces towards smaller units that convey a sense of privacy and confidentiality. On the upper floor the management offices and those units that require greater quiet and individuality are located. The lower level is reserved for events and has direct access outdoors onto generously sized terraces.

The curving office wings offer maximum flexibility in defining and separating units so that they can expand fluidly or shrink without creating the problem that, for instance as result of extension, part of one function suddenly finds itself in another wing. This also ensures flexibility in adapting to partner areas. The inserted core with the service functions forms an ambient filter to the partner areas so that, if required, a certain autonomy of the units can be achieved.

Oscillation with nature – an aspect that is also applied in the choice of materials and the differentiated way in which the overall design is formulated. The “core values” of Raiffeisen are given their place metaphorically: agriculture and forestry, nature and sustainability are expressed through the focussed, intensive use of wood. On the floors and some of the walls and ceilings wood is used in a variety of ways so that the entire interior can be experienced as a resonance of nature.

Oscillations of nature- the initial resonance is appropriately echoed in the bank’s future work for its partners and clients.
