READY FOR ACTION

Ideally, all the fire-fighting vehicles should beparked in a row ready for action. However, in the city the length ofpavement across which the fire engines can exit the fire stationbuilding is generally limited. Therefore, if the length available isnot enough to allow all the vehicles the same way of leaving thebuilding what should be done?

Feuerwach Landstraße 02

Stepping the fire engine exits back from thebuilding line ensures that all the vehicles can start directly fromBaumgasse! Proof of this is proved by tractrix analyses of thevehicles’ exit and return lines.

The two long fire engines have the option toreturn to the fire station via the Nottendorfergasse entrance, asthey can also drive to their parking place from the rear.

In accordance with the typical urban planningideal the block edge is closed, and the corners of the blockaccentuated. Precisely for this reason – and also to offer all themembers of the team, like their vehicles, accommodation of the samestandard – all the sleeping and relaxation areas are laid out onthe same level, all of them face west and form a “hovering beam”that defines Nottendorfergasse from an urban planning viewpoint.

" ...its radical approach is commended. The concept represents an excellent competition project although in formal terms it does not comply with the competition brief.” Excerpt from the minutes of the competition jury meeting.

The practice tower is placed in a situation ofspatial tension opposite the horizontal “hovering beam “. Itborders the courtyard, which is empty of vehicles and thereforeavailable and can also be used for activities or parking withouthindering the use of the fire engines.

The roof slab of the fire engine hall divides thebuilding’s configuration into a lower world of action and a higherworld of rest and recreation
