Hackenbuchner House

Haus Hackenbuchner 04

Clarity, precision, reduction
The house develops along movement and life sequences as well as topographical conditions into a complex structure of spatial sequences and material language, yet remains committed to the programmatic specifications in its calculated and harmonious overall effect.

The house is located on a north-facing slope overlooking the Lainzer Tiergarten. The diverse levels of this gently terraced plot are immediately incorporated and extend directly into the building as terraces. The necessary cuts in the terrain are articulated by wall panels, which together form a base-like structure in exposed concrete that grows out of the terrain and accommodates the areas for arrival, cooking, dining, and living. A sculpturally free-form white figure consisting of a single surface hovers above this structure.

Haus Hackenbuchner 05

The pedestal structure and white figure move independently of each other and permeate the interior and exterior spaces. The interior and exterior spaces flow into each other and are separated only by a thermal shell made of glass. All openings are created by the spatial movement of the surfaces of the pedestal structure and white figure, either within these elements or between them.
